Summary A field trial was conducted to examine the impact of growing sunn hemp (Crotolaria juncea) on belowground organisms such as plant-parasitic and beneficial nematodes and nematode-trapping fungi associated with a cucumber (Cucumis sativus) agroecosystem. Populations of plant-parasitic nematodes were not different between sunn hemp-cucumber and bare-ground cucumber plots at the end of cover crop season, but were greater (P < 0.05)* in the sunn hemp–cucumber plots at the end of cucumber harvest due to the greater cucumber plant stand in sunn hemp plots. Bacterial-feeding nematodes were found at higher densities in sunn hemp plots after its incorporation into the soil. Numbers of nematode-trapping fungi were also greater in plots containing sunn hemp. Despite the greater (P < 0.05) plant stand in sunn hemp plots compared to bare-ground cucumber plots, there were no significant differences in marketable yields. Potential reasons for the outcome and additional use of sunn hemp are discussed. Sunn hemp cover cropping and organic fertilizer effects on the nematode community under temperate growing conditions.

Field experiments were conducted in Maryland to investigate the influence of sunn hemp cover cropping in conjunction with organic and synthetic fertilizers on the nematode community in a zucchini cropping system. Two field treatments, zucchini planted into a sunn hemp living and surface mulch (SH) and zucchini planted into bare-ground (BG) were established during three field seasons from 2009 t...

Effects of the integration of sunn hemp and soil solarization on plant-parasitic and free-living nematodes.

Sunn hemp (SH), Crotolaria juncea, is known to suppress Rotylenchulus reniformis and weeds while enhancing free-living nematodes involved in nutrient cycling. Field trials were conducted in 2009 (Trial I) and 2010 (Trial II) to examine if SH cover cropping could suppress R. reniformis and weeds while enhancing free-living nematodes if integrated with soil solarization (SOL). Cover cropping of S...

Decomposition, nitrogen and carbon mineralization from food and cover crop residues in the central plateau of Haiti

Cover crops are a major focus of conservation agriculture efforts because they can provide soil cover and increase nutrient availability after their mineralization in cropping systems. To evaluate the effect of residue type and placement on rate of decomposition and carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) mineralization, residues from two food crops, maize (Zea mays L.) and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris ...

Intercropping Cover Crops with Pineapple for the Management of Rotylenchulus reniformis.

Effect of cover crops intercropped with pineapple (Ananas comosus) on Rotylenchulus reniformis population densities and activity of nematode-trapping fungi (NTF) were evaluated in two cycles of cover crop and pineapple. Sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea), rapeseed (Brassica napus), African marigold (Tagetes erecta), or weeds were intercropped with pineapples. Beds planted with sunn hemp or rapeseed ...
